In mythology there are numerous stories of quests. Heroes like Perseus, Hercules, Theseus, Jason and others undertook missions of great importance, risking their lives, encountering strange creatures and experiencing many adventures.
Mythic Quest attempts to capture the urgency, excitement, and drama of such an ancient journey. Flute and saxophone, equal partners, pursue each other through the musical adventure with vivid motifs. Mythic Quest consists of three main parts: A fast, energetic opening section gives way to a more relaxed mood before the quest concludes with an increasingly determined version of the opening ideas Mythic Quest was written in 2000 for Kenneth Fischer, professor of saxophone at the University of Georgia and past president of the North American Saxophone Alliance, and Lisa Bartholow, an accomplished flutist and coordinator of undergraduate studies at UGA
Performance notes: 1. This is a transposed score, the alto saxophone sounds a major second lower than notated. 2. There are numerous simultaneous cross-connections in this composition. Accidentals are effective throughout the measure
